Description A watercolour painting of the iron paddle gunboat Grappler (1845), signed by the artist lower right. The ship is shown under steam with her sails furled, against a picturesque background of distant mountains. Seagulls add interest in the foreground. Grappler saw frequent action against slave ships off the coast of Sierra Leone. The medium includes graphite.
