Description The British marine painter and graphic artist Robert Dodd (1748-1815) lived and worked in Wapping, London. The attribution of this painting to Dodd has not been proven. The Tower of London and the surrounding cityscape can be seen in the background lit from the left and beneath a tall build-up of clouds. Vessels of various types and sizes illustrate the busy activity on the river in the foreground. Just to the right of the centre of the composition a cutter crowded with passengers appears to be making her way towards a number of ships at anchor on the right. Stylistically the painting is executed in a Dutch manner, which prevailed in British marine art until the early 19th century.
