Description Glass bottle labelled ‘Ol. Caryoph.’ Oleum Caryophylli, Clove Oil, Oil of cloves, is an essential oil from the clove plant, Syzygium aromaticum. John Savory, 'A companion to the Medicine Chest', 1836, p.62 wrote; “Oil of Cloves. One or two drops of this oil corrects the griping tendency of cathartic pills, and sometimes appears to augment their efficacy. It is also used as an application for toothach.”
