Description Medal commemorating the death of Lieutenant Jan Carel Josephus van Speyk, 1831. Obverse: A draped female figure, with an extinguished torch, placing a laurel wreath on an pedestal with a relief of an exploding ship, the Dutch shield below (left). Legend: 'DE ONSTERFELYKHEID IS ZYN DEEL' (Immortality is his). Reverse: Inscription within a laurel wreath 'JAN, CAREL JOSEPHUS, VAN SPEYK HANDHAVER DER HOLLANDSCHE VLAG, 5 FEBRUARY, MDCCCXXXI' (John Charles Joseph van Speyk, defender of the Dutch flag, 1831).
