Amundsen describes the arrival at the Pole so simply, so modestly, and yet so vividly, that the English readers of his book, "The South Pole," could have no feelings but those of generous sympathy with the brave and persevering Norwegians. Pride and affection shone in the five pairs of eyes that gazed on the Norwegian flag as it was unfurled and planted at the Pole. Oscar Wisting delighted the whole party by producing presentss of pipes and tobacco. It was he who engraved the words "South Pole" on almost every article taken there.'
