Description | Submarine cable. Sixteen samples of submarine cables - eight short lengths and eight cross sections - stored in a glazed wooden box: 1) Atlantic Cable 1866 - core of seven copper wires coated with four layers of gutta percha alternating with four layers of Chatterton's compound covered with a cushion of tarred jute. The outer sheathing consists of twelve iron wires covered by tarred hemp and compound. 2) 1865 - the sheathing of ten wires are individually covered with a serving of hemp soaked in tar, india rubber and pitch with an outer sheathing of thirty-six wires grouped in threes. 3) 1873 - similar to number two but the inner sheathing consists of twelve iron wires. 4) 1858 - similar to number one. 5) 1865 - similar to number two but without the outer sheathing. 6) 1873 - similar to number five but with a smooth outer surface 7) 1866 - similar to number five but the sheathing around the outer sheathing hasn't been tarred. 8) 1858 - the outer sheathing contains eighteen strands each containing seven iron wires - 22 gauge. |
