| Description | Full dress coat worn by Commodore Robert Oliver (1783–1848), of the Indian Navy. This double-breasted tailcoat is the 1828 regulation pattern, although it was made in 1837, and reflects the fashionable cut of men’s clothes for the late 1820s. The sleeves feature a puffed shoulder and terminate in a mariner’s cuff edged with gold lace. The cuff also features two rows of distinction lace; it should be noted that the top band of lace is missing on the right cuff. The chest and shoulders have been padded to give a rounded effect, with the wadding held in place with rows of running stitch. The back of the coat features two three-point faux pocket flaps, as the pocket bags are accessed through the tails. The tails are lined with white wool. The hip buttons are outlined with padded gold lace. |
