Biographical details Mayes' career was spent in the merchant naval service and he was a crew member on the SARAH SANDS steamship which was a troopship during the Crimean War. He obtained his only mate’s certificate in 1854 and master’s in 1867. He spent all his working life at sea on trading voyages.
Description Journal kept by William Edward Mayes (1831-1891), master mariner, whilst Captain of the KEWADIN between 1877 and 1879, covering voyages to and from Brazil and then to and from the Baltic Sea. The journal provides an interesting insight into a sailing ship carrying bulk cargo during the 1870’s. This is a handwritten journal written after the voyages took place.
