Biographical details Robert Gale served as captain's steward on board HMS RATTLESNAKE, commanded by Captain Owen Stanley (1811-50). On board were the scientists and naturalists Thomas Henry Huxley (1825-1895), and John MacGillivray (1821-1867).
Description Diary kept by Robert Gale, captain's steward on board HMS RATTLESNAKE on the scientific surveying cruise to Australia and New Guinea, between 1846 and 1850. Also includes a diary kept between 1847 and 1849; a notebook concerning a list of shells, stones etc and a sketchbook of coastal views.
