Description A half-length portrait to left of Samuel Hood (1762–1814) in captain’s (over three years) full-dress uniform, 1795–1812, with the Nile medal, the ribbon and star of the Order of the Bath and the neck ribbon and decoration of the Sicilian Order of St Ferdinand and of Merit. His empty right sleeve is pinned to his waist. A fringed curtain in the background, lifted on the left to reveal a view of a ship at sea. Lettered beneath image with the title, ‘Sir Samuel Hood, K.B. K.S.F.’, and the publication details, ‘Painted by J. Downman Esq. / Engraved by C. Turner. / Published Novr. 13. 1806, by George Andrews No.7. Charing Cross.’ This portrait was engraved by Charles Turner after a pastel study by John Downman, dated 1806. Downman’s pastel study is now in the British Museum in volume 3 of the Fourth Series of the artist’s ‘First Sketches of Portraits of Distinguished Persons’, together with pendant sketch of the sitter’s wife, the Honourable Mary Elizabeth Frederica Mackenzie. This print was published by George Andrews in November 1806. (Updated May 2019.)
