Description Wooden box, the lid painted with a Belgian ensign with a warship in the distance and inscribed 'R.N.D. 1914' (Royal Naval Division). The base of the box marked 'MADE BY THE INTERNED SAILORS IN GRONINGEN HOLLAND 1914-1915'. After brief training the RND was sent to defend Antwerp alongside Belgian forces in the opening stages of the war. Fifteen hundred men crossed the Dutch frontier and were interned in the Netherlands to avoid capture by the Germans, the remaining survivors embarked for Dover in October 1914.
