Description A transit instrument is the name given to a telescope mounted at right angles to a crossbar support. It is generally used to measure the "transit" or passage of the stars across a meridian. This instrument was used on one of the expeditions to observe the Transit of Venus in 1874. From 1927 to 1957, Britain's Time Service depended on this type of small Transit Instrument for time determination at Greenwich and later, at Abinger.
