Description Before arriving in England, van de Velde the Elder was known throughout Europe for his pen-painting, a rough translation of the Dutch term penschilderij. Combining the scale and subjects of oil painting with the skill of a miniature painter, pen-painting was especially suited to maritime subjects, where detail and accuracy were very important.
