Object ID PAF0960
Description original art: drawing. A view looking north-west from the high ground of Greenwich Park to the west of the Observatory, over the town centre. The point of the Isle of Dogs at Millwall is at far right, the spire of St Alfege, the parish church of Greenwich lower left, and the tower of St Mary's Church lower centre. The last was a chapel of ease (supplementary church) of St Alfege, built to the design of George Basevi in the 1820s and demolished as redundant in 1935-36. The site was added to the grounds of the National Maritime Museum in 2009-10 along with John Nixon's statue of William IV which was moved onto it in 1936 after the church's demolition. The drawing is a study for the print which is PAF0715 (and a related oil painting that Wyllie exibited at the Royal Academy and presented to the Borough of Greenwich to hang in the town hall). It also closely relates to another print of which the NMM collection does not currently (2018) have a copy, looking north across the river rather than east, from the same slightly 'off-Grand Axis' viewpoint.
