Object ID BHC1075
Description The small panel shows a group of sailors in a rowing boat setting out through coastal waters towards a three-master in the background. Seagulls and a buoy can be seen to the left completing the simple composition. Whether the picture - which was probably painted towards the middle of thef the 19th century or perhaps a little later - was intended as an illustration to a literary story remains to be answered. Noting is known of the painter called ‘Sands’. The painting itself is not signed and whether the name is inscribed on the reverse or was otherwise supplied on acquisition remains to be confirmed (2012).
