| Description | A relic of Sir John Franklin's last expedition 1845-8. A gilt metal, Royal Naval uniform button with threads attached, as worn by commissioned officers - military and civil branch 1843-1891. It was bought from the Inuit by the McClintock Search Expedition on 3 March 1859, near Cape Victoria, on the Boothia Peninsula. Refered to in F.L. McClintock's 'The Voyage of the Fox in Arctic Seas' p. 369 as 'a few small naval and other metal buttons', p. 370 'readily sold for a few needles each, also the buttons which they wore as ornaments on their dresses.' |
