Franklin relics

Object details:

Object ID AAA2126
Description A relic of Sir John Franklin's last expedition 1845-48. Part of a wool glove found by Lieutenant W.R. Hobson at an abandoned camp site at Cape Felix, King William Island on 25 May 1859. The item was collected by the McClintock Search Expedition 1857-59. The glove is knitted and has almost totally disintigrated. McClintock described it as a 'worsted glove, colours red, white and blue'. The engraving in the 'Illustrated London News', 15 October 1859, shows the glove almost intact with an elaborate pattern incorporating a Scandinavian design. The gloves are likely to have been bought in one of the Danish settlements in Greenland.
