Description | Framed watercolour drawing with pen and ink entitled 'A View in Ulietea', signed by the artist and dated. This is an example of Webber doing Pacific subjects long after his voyage, in this case a study of a canoe on one of Tahiti's neaighbouring islands. He first painted an oil version in 1786, shown at the Royal Academy in 1787. This one followed, with two known copies of it in or about the same year, and prints deriving from one of them. See Joppiien and Smith, 'The Art of Captain Cook's Voyages', vol. III, 3.154-157, of which this is 3.155. [PvdM 1/18] |
