Description Celestial pocket globe - case for the terrestrial pocket globe. Spherical case consists of two hinged hemispheres with two hook and eye clasps. It is lined with gores depicting the celestial sphere. A few star configurations are drawn around the zodiac, and six individual stars are labelled. In the centre of the hemisphere is a picture of the Sun, and centred round it, the solar system and the Milky Way are depicted. The Solar System includes the recently discovered planet Uranus, labelled here Herschal, which is represented with six satellites. William Herschel, who discovered Uranus in 1781, also discovered two of its satellites in 1787 and suspected four more. Two were confirmed in 1851 and another in 1948. Then the Voyager 2 spacecraft, 1985/6 brought the known total up to 15.
