Description Tahitian breadfruit pounder, with a cross bar handle. This is a rare type in polished stone which is a variation on the more common forked-top type. It was collected on Captain Cook's 3rd Voyage. 'Of bread fruit they make two or three dishes by beating it with a stone pestil til it makes a paste, mixing water or cocoa nut liquor or both with it and adding ripe plantains bananoes Sour paste &c' Beaglehole "Voyage of the Endeavour" p.122
