Description |
This is a hand-held achromatic telescope for use on board ship. It has a single draw tube, an extending shade for the objective lens to reduce glare when in use and a sliding eyepiece cover. The barrel is covered in leather, while all the other fittings are brass.
The maker's details are inscribed on the draw tube: 'J.P. Cutts Sutton & Son, / Opticians to Her Majesty, / Sheffield & London'. The firm's trademark, the words 'TRY ME' (although the engraving appears as 'TRY MF') beneath an anchor, also appears on the draw tube. The firm was in business in the second half of the 19th century. |
