Object ID ZBA2283.19
Description No 19. from Players cigarette cards, second series of 25, 'Polar Exploration'. The front shows two seals, captioned: 'Player's Cigarettes WEDDEL SEALS ASLEEP.' Reverse: 'Weddel Seals Asleep on the Sea-ice. These seals supply all that is required in the way of fresh meat for an Antarctic Expedition. The flesh in taste is somewhat similar to veal, the liver being a special delicacy. An average full grown seal weighs 700 lbs, and yields quite 2 cwt. of good meat. The hide is of little commercial value, this class of seal being quite different to the little fur-bearing animal. The Weddel Seal feeds on shrimps and fish, and having gorged himself with food he sleeps for days on the ice-floe.'
