Description Scale: 1: 48 A contemporary half block model of the steam yacht ‘Ivy’ (1896). This highly detailed model is mounted in its original and very unusual curved fronted glazed wooden case. It is complete with a whole range of fittings including guns for policing. It was built of composite construction with wooden planking on iron frames and measured 220 feet in length by 34 feet in the beam and a tonnage of 870 gross. This vessel was commissioned for the Niger Coast Protectorate and was responsible for patrolling the Niger delta. In 1900 the Protectorate was joined to the Lower Niger, to become the Protectorate of Southern Nigeria, which was later renamed Nigeria in 1914. The ‘Ivy’ was capable of a top speed of 13 1/2 knots and remained in service until 1923.
