Object ID SLR0457
Description Scale: 1:48. A contemporay full hull model of a 24-gun, sixth-rate sloop (circa 1740) built in the Georgian style. The hull below the main wales has been carved from a solid block of wood whilst the upper works have been added(?) with individual planks laid glued on. It has a painted lead keel together with a large sheet of lead internally which would suggest that the model was used for trials in the water such as sailing, trimming or towing(?). The gundeck is piecred with 22 gunports, 4 of which at the stern are glased. The forecastle has 4 swivel gun mounts and the quarter has 4 gunports with 6 swivel gun mounts. The model is partialy decked with veneer sheets scored with individual planks and is complete with a number of fittings such as a galley stove under forecastle deck, a capstan on the gundeck below the quarter deck. The hatch gratings located along the centre line are correctly made up in the traditional way. There is no painted deecoration and the figurehead and stern galleries have been reproduced in carved blocks of wood. There is what appears to be a small chiken coup on deck inboard of the taffrail at the stern. The whole model is mounted on a 20th century base with pair of wooden crutches and cross pieces.
Date made circa 1740
