Calendar coins were deliberately struck on the same kind of metal blanks as pennies, so as to be familiar and easy to carry. They feature a compact calendar for a year, the dates of new and full moons and a series of other useful dates. Disc perpetual calendars were a development from these; having less information, but providing a calendar for a number of years into the future. (I wish other people were interested in these)
